SEPSIS: COMPLICATIONS THAT CAN LEAD TO A CRITICAL CONDITION

1. What is sepsis and why is it dangerous?

Sepsis occurs when the body mounts an exaggerated response to bacteria or infectious agents, leading to widespread inflammation and organ dysfunction. Bacteria from the skin, central nervous system, respiratory system, urinary tract, gastrointestinal tract, or musculoskeletal system can enter the bloodstream and trigger a severe inflammatory response.

2. Risk factors

High-risk individuals include:

• Elderly individuals, particularly those over 65 years of age.

• Patients with chronic conditions such as diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, liver disease, or malignancies.

• Individuals with compromised immune systems resulting from underlying pathologies or immunosuppressive therapy.

• Inpatients undergoing treatment with intravenous access lines or mechanical ventilation.

3. Symptoms of sepsis

• Altered consciousness: stupor, agitation, or coma

• High fever or hypothermia.

• Tachycardia and hypotension.

• Dyspnea, with an abnormally increased or decreased respiratory rate

• Pale skin and mucous membranes, potentially accompanied by subcutaneous hemorrhage.

4. Treatment and Prevention

Sepsis requires prompt identification of the infectious source and immediate, targeted antibiotic therapy, alongside corrective interventions for organ dysfunction—such as fluid resuscitation, electrolyte management, vasopressors, respiratory support, and coagulopathy management.
Prevention plays an important role:

• Administer vaccines against infectious diseases such as influenza and pneumonia.

• Maintain proper hand hygiene and appropriate wound care.

• Optimally manage chronic conditions and vigilantly monitor for any abnormal signs.

Pope Francis, just like anyone else, may encounter health issues, especially with advancing age. Sepsis represents a critical potential risk, particularly for immunocompromised individuals. Therefore, enhancing awareness regarding this condition is imperative.
